Local SEO for law firms, accountants and financial advisers

Legal and financial searches split three ways: by practice area, by office and by person. 'Family lawyer', 'probate solicitor' and 'accountant for contractors' can each show a different local pack, lawyers and financial planners can hold Google profiles in their own names, and the research questions clients ask first, such as how probate works or what a divorce costs, can be answered by an AI Overview before any firm appears. SearchOps tracks all three for your firm, along with what ChatGPT and Gemini say when a client asks who to hire.

  • Rankings for each practice area, in each office's town
  • AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini for the questions clients ask
  • Individual lawyers' and advisers' profiles tracked alongside the firm
  • Reviews in one inbox, with replies drafted for you to check

The problem

Firm, offices and individual lawyers compete separately

Google's guidelines treat lawyers and financial planners as individual practitioners who can have their own Business Profiles, with titles such as Esq. or CFA, as long as they can be contacted at the office during stated hours. A mid-sized firm's visibility is therefore spread across a profile for each office and one for each public-facing lawyer or adviser, and each can appear for different searches. Tracking only the firm name misses most of that picture.

01

Each practice area can show a different set of firms, so strength in conveyancing says nothing about employment law.

02

Research searches about legal and money problems can bring up AI Overviews that cite a few sources before any firm is listed.

03

Professional conduct rules limit what you can say in a public reply to a client's review.

04

Advertising rules for lawyers, such as the American Bar Association's model rules on claiming to be a certified specialist, apply to profile descriptions as much as to your website.

Questions SearchOps answers

What partners and marketing teams need to know

These five questions decide where a firm's marketing budget should go next, practice area by practice area. Each one is answered by data SearchOps collects for every office and profile.

01Practice areas

Which practice areas do we actually show up for?

Track each practice area as its own keyword in each office's town, such as 'personal injury lawyer Houston', 'probate solicitor Bristol' or 'small business accountant Calgary'. Google Search Visibility shows your position in web results and the Map Pack, and whether AI Overviews link to you, on desktop and mobile.

A clear view of the work your visibility supports

02Offices

How far does each office's visibility reach?

Geo-grid scans show each office's Google Maps position across the area it serves, with the firms ahead of it at each point. Firms with several offices see each one on its own, so a strong head office doesn't hide a weak branch.

Office-by-office coverage, and the local firms you compete with

03AI answers

Which firms does ChatGPT recommend for our practice areas?

SearchOps asks ChatGPT and Gemini the questions clients ask before they call, such as which employment lawyers in the city handle dismissal cases, or which accountants work with contractors. You see how often your firm is recommended, the firms named instead, how your firm is described, and the directories, publications and review sites the answers cite.

04Reputation

How does our reputation compare with the firms clients weigh us against?

Reviews from connected Google profiles arrive in one inbox, with sentiment grouped by topic such as communication, cost and outcome. The reviews view compares your rating and review count with the firms from your map scans, and the agent drafts replies for you to check against your professional rules before anything is posted.

05Enquiries

Is our Google presence producing enquiries?

Connect each office's Google Business Profile to see calls, website clicks and direction requests, and the searches that showed the listing. Connect Search Console too, and you can see which practice-area searches already bring people to your site and which sit just off page one.

Use cases

Questions firms bring to the data

Illustrative examples from law firms, accountancy practices and financial advisers, and the kind of answer SearchOps gives.

Employment law firmChicago, Illinois

We're known for employment law, so why aren't we getting wrongful termination enquiries?

Rank tracking for 'wrongful termination lawyer Chicago' shows the firm on page two of web results and absent from the Map Pack, while an AI Overview cites guides from two rival firms. AI visibility checks show ChatGPT naming the same two firms. The gap is specific to one practice area, and the cited sources show what the rivals publish that the firm doesn't.

Accountancy practiceAuckland, New Zealand

Do small business owners find us, or the big firms in the centre?

Scans for 'small business accountant' across the suburbs show the practice holding the Map Pack near its office but losing the wider area to two central firms with far more reviews. Tracking the same search over the following months shows whether a steady flow of new reviews moves that boundary.

Conveyancing solicitors, three officesYorkshire, UK

Which of our offices is pulling its weight online?

Each office is tracked as its own location. Scans and rank checks for 'conveyancing solicitor' in each town show two offices appearing strongly and the third missing from the Map Pack, and its profile shows fewer calls and direction requests than the others. The firm can focus on one office instead of reworking all three.

Independent financial plannerVancouver, Canada

What does ChatGPT say when someone asks for a retirement planner nearby?

AI visibility checks ask ChatGPT and Gemini for fee-only retirement planners in Vancouver. The planner is named in some answers and described accurately, but the answers lean on a directory profile that is out of date. Updating that listing is a small change to what the assistants read.

FAQ

Legal & professional. Questions we get

Start with the categories and profiles. Choose the category that matches the firm's core work, for example 'Family law attorney' in the US or 'Family lawyer' in the UK rather than a general 'Law firm' where that fits, list each practice area as a service, and make sure every office and public-facing lawyer has an accurate profile. Reviews matter too, because Google names them as part of prominence. SearchOps shows which practice areas each office appears for, and which firms appear ahead of you.

Yes. Google's guidelines allow public-facing professionals such as lawyers to have their own profile alongside the firm's. Each profile can be a tracked location in SearchOps, so you can see the firm and its people side by side.

Questions such as how a divorce works or what a probate lawyer costs can be answered on the results page by an AI Overview, and people can also ask an assistant which firm to use. Those answers cite a few sources and name a few firms. SearchOps shows whether AI Overviews link to you for your tracked searches, and how often ChatGPT and Gemini recommend your firm.

Yes, if replies stay general: don't confirm that the reviewer is a client or mention their matter, and invite them to contact the firm directly. Bodies such as the American Bar Association and the Solicitors Regulation Authority treat client confidentiality as applying online too. In SearchOps the agent drafts replies for you to check, and nothing is posted unless you send it.

SearchOps measures and reports, and we don't buy ads. Nothing goes out on Google unless you send it: posts and review replies are published only when you choose, and automatic replies stay off unless you switch them on. Whether your content and review responses meet your professional rules is your call; we show you where you stand.

We don't track rankings inside directories. AI Sources shows which directories, publications and review sites AI answers cite for your practice areas, so you can see whether a directory profile is shaping who gets recommended.

Not at the moment. SearchOps tracks Google, which handles the large majority of searches in the UK and US, alongside ChatGPT and Gemini. If Bing matters to your firm, tell us.
