Geo-Grid Rank Tracking

Your visibility on Google changes from one street to the next. A geo-grid scan runs a live Google search from every point on a grid around your business and plots what came back on a map: your Google Maps position, whether you're in the local pack on Google's results page, what the AI Overview said, and whether Google's AI Mode names you. You see where you win customers, where competitors take them, and who those competitors are.

Track hyper-local rankings on all three of Google's local surfaces

Why it's different

Built for the way local SEO actually works

Up to 21×21 grids

Up to 441 points per scan on Google Maps and Google Search (15×15 on Starter), covering anything from 1 km to 100 km across.

Three Google engines

Google Maps, Google Search with the AI Overview, and Google AI Mode. Every business found comes with its address and category where we can match its listing.

Live, at the time you choose

Every scan is a fresh Google search. Schedule any engine daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly, on the day and at the time you pick.

Client-ready reports

Share any scan with a link your clients open without a login, or export the tables as CSV.

Precision

Visibility that changes street by street

Checking Google from one location gives you one number, and it only describes that spot. Your business shows differently on every block. A geo-grid scan checks from every point around your location, so you see exactly where customers find you and where they don't.

  • Google Maps: colour-coded pins (green = top 3, yellow = 4 to 10, orange = 11 to 15, red = 16 to 20, grey = not in the top 20)
  • Google Search: your spot in the local pack where you make the top 3, and where an AI Overview appeared
  • Google AI Mode: named or not named at every point, and whether it used your site as a source
  • Compare a scan with an earlier one for the same keyword and engine to see which points gained or lost ground

Run one for your business

Three engines

One grid, three places Google lists local businesses

The same search can show different businesses on Google Maps, on Google's results page and in AI Mode. Each scan runs on one of them, so you can measure the one your customers use, or all three side by side.

Google Maps

Your Maps position at every point

At each point we search Google Maps for your keyword, with the map centred on that point and zoomed to match your grid spacing.

What you see

  • Your position from 1 to 20 on every pin, colour-coded
  • The top 20 businesses at each point, with address, category, rating and reviews
  • Who appears most across the grid, their average position and how often they make the top 3
  • 1 credit per point
  • grids up to 21×21
Google Search + AI Overview

The local pack and the AI Overview on Google's results page

At each point we run a Google search and read the first results page: the local pack (the three businesses under the map) and the AI Overview when Google shows one.

What you see

  • Whether you're in the local pack's top 3, and in which spot
  • The three businesses in the pack at each point, with address, category and rating
  • Where an AI Overview appeared, whether it cited your site, which businesses it named and which pages it drew on
  • 2 credits per point
  • grids up to 21×21
Google AI Mode

Whether Google's AI answer names you

At each point we ask Google's AI Mode your keyword, as a searcher at that spot would. Our agent reads the answer and picks out every business it names and every page it cites.

What you see

  • Named in a list, named in the text, your site cited without your name, or not named
  • Every business the answer named, with address and category where we can match a listing
  • The sources AI Mode drew on, and how often each was cited across the grid
  • 2 credits per point
  • grids up to 9×9
  • US, UK and India

Competitive intelligence

See who shows up instead of you, pin by pin

A position tells you where you stand. It doesn't tell you who is standing in front of you. Tap any pin to see the businesses Google returned at that exact spot, with their address, category, rating and reviews, then see across the whole grid who turns up most.

  • Maps: the top 20 businesses at every point, and each competitor's average position and top 3 share across the grid
  • Google Search: who holds the local pack at each point, plus the businesses and sources the AI Overviews used
  • AI Mode: every business the answers named, how many points named each, and the pages they cited
  • The businesses that show up most across your latest Maps scan are benchmarked in your next GBP audit

Every point coloured by whoever Google listed first. Tap a point to see the full results there.

Run one for your business

How a scan works

What happens at every point on the grid

A scan is a set of real Google searches, one per point, run at the moment you start it (or at the time you schedule).

  1. 1

    We lay out the grid

Evenly spaced points around your business, from a 3×3 grid to 21×21, covering anything from 1 km to 100 km across. You can turn the grid to follow a coastline or a high street.

  2. 2

A live search from every point

Each point is its own Google search, run at the moment of the scan with the location set to that point's exact coordinates. Signed out, with no search history, in the main language of the country. Never a cached or estimated result.

  3. 3

    We read what Google returned

On Maps, the top 20 businesses in order. On the results page, the local pack and any AI Overview. In AI Mode, the answer itself: our agent picks out the businesses it names and the pages it cites.

  4. 4

    We fill in the details

Google's results page and AI answers often name a business without its address. We match each one to its Google business listing to add the address, category and rating, and only when the match is clear. When it isn't, we leave it blank rather than guess.

  5. 5

You get the map and the tables

Every point plotted and colour-coded, with the businesses found there one tap away. Tables across the whole grid, CSV exports, a share link for clients, and a comparison with your last scan.

Accuracy

Why grid results are steadier than a single rank

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, so where the search happens matters. A tracker that checks from one spot reports one position, and moving that spot a few streets can change it. That reads as a ranking swing when nothing about your business moved. A grid measures the whole area instead.

On the sample scan the maps on this page show.

  • The same points every time

A scheduled scan repeats the same grid, keyword and engine on every run. When a pin changes colour, something changed at that spot, not in where the check was made.

  • Many readings, one picture

You read the share of points where you make the top 3, not one number. A single unusual point can't swing the result the way it swings a one-location check.

  • Measured where businesses are listed

Maps and the local pack list Google Business Profiles. Google's web results also mix in videos, news, forums and shopping, which can move a website up or down without anything changing on it.

  • AI answers reported honestly

AI Mode can word its answer differently each time it's asked. So we report whether it named you and at how many points, never a position it doesn't have.

  • What a new customer sees

Results are signed out with no search history: what someone who has never found you would see at that spot. Someone signed in to Google can see a slightly different list.

Scheduled scans

Scan at the moments your customers search

Every scan is live, so when it runs matters. Schedule any engine daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly, on the day and at the time you choose, in your own time zone. Each run uses the same grid, so this week compares cleanly with last week.

What it uses

What does a scan cost?

Scans use the scan credits included in your plan. Google Maps costs 1 credit per grid point, and Google Search + AI Overview and Google AI Mode cost 2 credits per point. Small grids covering a single neighbourhood use few credits; wider grids covering a whole city use more. You see the exact cost before any scan runs. See the pricing page for each plan's monthly credits.

Geo-Grid Rank Tracking FAQ

Questions we get

Not answered here? Contact us

How is geo-grid tracking different from regular rank tracking?
A regular rank tracker checks your keyword from one location and reports one position. Geo-grid tracking runs the search from every point on a grid across your area and plots each result on a map, so you see where you show up well and where you don't, street by street.
Are the scans live?
Yes. Every point is a fresh Google search, run when the scan runs, with the search location set to that point's exact coordinates. Nothing is cached or estimated. Large grids are queued for a minute or so before they run, and scheduled scans run at the time you set.
Which Google engines can a scan use?
Three. Google Maps reports your Maps position at every point, out of the top 20. Google Search + AI Overview reports whether you're in the local pack's top 3 on Google's results page, and when an AI Overview shows, whether it cites you, which businesses it names and which pages it draws on. Google AI Mode reports whether Google's AI Mode names your business at every point, and which businesses and sources it uses. Each scan runs on one engine, and scheduled campaigns can run any of the three.
How accurate are the results?
Each point is checked with the search location set to that exact coordinate, using signed-out Google results with no search history, in the main language of the country. That shows what a new customer standing at that point would see. Someone signed in to Google can see a slightly different list, because Google personalises results by history and device.
Why do grid results move less than other rank trackers?
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, so where a search happens changes what it shows. A tracker that checks from one spot reports one position, and a small change in that spot can move it. A grid repeats the same points on every run and reports the share of points where you make the top 3, so one unusual point doesn't swing your result.
Where do the business addresses come from?
Google Maps returns them directly. Google's results page and AI answers often name a business without an address, so we match each business to its Google business listing and add the address, category and rating. We only do that when the match is clear. When it isn't, the address is left blank rather than guessed.
Do you track my position in Google's web results?
No. We measure the places Google lists businesses: Maps, the local pack, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google's web results (the list of website links) are the one part of the page we can't measure reliably from outside, so we don't sell a number for them.
Why is AI Mode named or not named rather than a position?
Because an AI answer is written text, not an ordered list. Google's AI Mode can name the same businesses in a different order each time, so a position would suggest a precision that isn't there. At every point we report whether it named you, and across the grid, how often.
Can I schedule scans for a particular time of day?
Yes. Scheduled scans run daily, weekly, every two weeks or monthly, on the day and at the time you choose, in your time zone. A restaurant can scan "pizza near me" every Friday evening, and an agency can have every client's scans finished before Monday morning.
Do I need a separate scan for each keyword?
Yes. Each scan targets one keyword, engine and grid, which keeps the data clean and comparable. Running the same keyword over time with the same grid lets you see exactly which points moved. Credits are used per grid point.
Which countries and cities do you support?
Google Maps and Google Search scans work in every country where Google Maps operates. Google AI Mode scans are available for locations in the US, UK and India, which is where we can check it reliably.
How often should I re-scan?
For most businesses, weekly scans strike the right balance between noise and signal. Agencies tracking competitive terms often run daily. Scheduled campaigns automate this on any engine: set it once and we run it for you.
Can I white-label reports for my clients?
White-label reports are included on Agency and Enterprise: your logo, brand colours and your own report sub-domain on the client reports you share. Geo-grid scans can be shared by link on every paid plan with no login needed for your clients. On Agency and Enterprise those links carry your branding; on Starter and Pro they show standard SearchOps branding.
