Google Business Profile categories

Your Google Business Profile primary category is, by a clear margin, the single most influential field on the entire listing, and Google's own guidance is to pick the most specific one that describes your business.¹ The complete, searchable list of categories we currently track is right below. Why the primary category is the highest-leverage field

Google's Map Pack ranks results using three documented inputs: relevance, distance, and prominence.² The category field is the highest-bandwidth signal Google has for relevance, because it is structured. Unlike the description or your services list, where Google has to infer meaning from prose, the category is a direct, machine-readable claim about what you are.

That direct claim has consequences across the stack:

• Map Pack candidacy. A search for "italian restaurant near me" is evaluated against businesses with restaurant-family primary categories. If your primary category is "Restaurant" rather than "Italian restaurant", you are competing for every restaurant query rather than winning the Italian-specific ones.
• Knowledge Graph typing. Google's knowledge panels for local businesses are managed through the Business Profile,³ and the category is the profile's structured statement of what kind of business you are. Downstream systems, including AI Mode and AI Overviews, can only read the type you give them.
• Sector-conditional fields. Many GBP fields, attribute groups, and "More hours" types only appear when a category from the relevant family is set, so the category you choose changes which fields you are even offered.
• Filtered search. Searches like "wheelchair accessible dentist" or "Italian restaurant with outdoor seating" combine a category-bounded candidate set with an attribute filter. If you do not have the right primary category, no amount of attribute completeness will surface you for these.

How Google generates the category list

Google does not publish a stable, versioned taxonomy of GBP categories. The list is produced from two main inputs which Google updates continuously:

1. The in-product category picker inside the GBP dashboard. When you edit your primary or secondary categories, the autocomplete is querying Google's live list. New categories appear here first.
2. The Business Information API, the developer-facing read of the same list. The categories.list endpoint⁴ returns the categories available for a given regionCode and language, along with the internal category ID that the API uses. Apps and internal tools that operate at scale read from here.

Two practical consequences of this design:

• Category names are region- and language-specific. A UK profile may see "Off licence" where a US profile sees "Liquor store". The Business Information API returns the list for a given regionCode and languageCode.
• Names occasionally change without notice, and near-duplicates such as "Dentist" and "Dental clinic" sit side by side, so the one you remember may not be the one Google shows today. Tools that hard-code category names will drift; the category ID in the API is more stable, but most operators are working with names in the UI.

How to pick the right primary category

Secondary categories: coverage versus dilution

GBP allows up to nine secondary categories on top of your primary. Secondary categories expand the query set you are a candidate for, but they do not carry the same weight as the primary, and unrelated secondaries can dilute the relevance signal Google reads from your listing as a whole.

Useful patterns:

• Add adjacent specialisms. A "Plumber" might add "Drainage service", "Central heating service", "Gas installation service", "Bathroom remodeler". Each opens a query family that genuinely describes work you do.
• Do not stretch. A florist adding "Wedding planner" when you only sell flowers for weddings, not coordinate them, is the kind of stretch that gets reported and removed.
• Three to six is usually right. Most service businesses do best with three to six secondary categories. Nine stretched ones consistently underperform six honest ones in the listings we audit.

Regulated and high-scrutiny categories

Some categories trigger a heightened verification and review bar. Google's policies and enforcement on these have tightened steadily over the past several years, and they show up most often during claim, reinstatement, and post-edit review. The table below tags these asRegulated.

Categories that draw extra scrutiny include, but are not limited to:⁵

• Healthcare: all medical practitioner categories, dental specialisms, mental health services, regulated allied health (physiotherapy, podiatry), pharmacies, and care homes.
• Legal: solicitors, barristers, attorneys, conveyancers, and law firms. Expect closer review and requests for proof of registration.
• Financial: accountants, financial advisors, mortgage brokers, insurance brokers, banks, and wealth management firms.
• Locksmith: historically the single most-abused GBP category, locksmiths now face some of the closest review on the platform; have your licensing and business documentation ready before you claim.
• Veterinary: animal hospitals and veterinary surgeons face the same documentation bar as their human-healthcare counterparts in most markets.

Edge cases worth knowing

Auditing your category choice

• Walk the GBP category picker for your sector and write down every category that genuinely describes work you do
• Identify the most specific primary category Google offers that you would honestly use to describe your business to a new customer
• Search your top three commercial keywords and read the primary category of the three Map Pack winners with a category-inspector extension
• If your primary differs from at least two of the three winners, consider whether they are using a more specific match Google offers
• Pick three to six secondary categories that genuinely describe additional work you do, not query families you want to rank for
• If you are in a regulated sector, have your registration documentation to hand before changing categories
• After any category change, walk the entire GBP edit flow to find newly-available fields and attributes

How often we update this list

Categories appear, disappear, and rename on Google's schedule, not ours. Our editorial process for keeping this list current:

• Regularly: a full sweep against the in-product picker and the Business Information API across our four regions (UK, US, Canada, Australia).
• After every major Google update: an out-of-band check, because Google's larger spam and quality updates have historically coincided with category-list pruning.
